Moon Race Heats Up
It looks like the moon is going to be a busy place in five or six years. Russia has announced their robotic return to the moon, the first such missions in over thirty years, to take place in the 2012 time frame. So now Russia joins the United States, China, India, and Japan as contenders in the race back to the moon.
Russia's probes will mostly be penetrators, which will impact the surface and penetrate below. Two of the ten HSP (High-Speed Penetrators) packages will impact near the Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 landing sites. Hopefully their aim is good enough to avoid impacting the landing sites themselves.
